Zhongshan Institute for Drug Discovery (ZIDD) is an innovation and entrepreneurship platform integrating new drug research and development, high-level talent training, and translation of scientific discoveries. It is located in  Zhongshan City, Guangdong Province, the central hinterland of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).

With the support of the Zhongshan Municipal Government, ZIDD will leverage the strengths of the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Sciences in terms of faculty, disciplines, and training systems, and unite the strengths of universities and research institutes in the region to explore a new model of "university + research institute" cooperation and training through the deep integration of industry, university, research institute, and capital, to cultivate more innovative professionals in new drug research for the GBA.

As of November 2022, there are 38 academic faculty members in post at ZIDD, including 34 Ph.D supervisors, as well as 272 jointly trained postgraduates, including 5 Ph.D students and 267 master students (2 are international students). Currently, ZIDD has signed cooperation agreements with Zunyi Medical University, Guizhou Medical University, Southern Medical University, Dalian University of Technology, Tsinghua  Shenzhen International Graduate School, Jinan University, Guangdong Pharmaceutical University, Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, China Pharmaceutical University and Shihezi University for joint postgraduate training (schools in order of signing time).

Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica(SIMM), Chinese Academy of Sciences is the oldest comprehensive pharmaceutical research institute in China, having evolved from Peking Institute of Materia Medica, Academia Sinica, founded in 1932.

SIMM is authorized to award master and doctorate degrees in the first-level discipline of pharmaceutical sciences, including medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, pharmaceutical analysis, pharmaceutics, and drug design.

SIMM has launched the international postgraduate program in pharmaceutical science since 2016. The program aims to recruit excellent international undergraduates, cultivate high-level pharmaceutical talents and promote international cooperation between China and other countries and high-level education for pharmaceutical research. The basic study duration of the international postgraduate program is 3 years. All colleges are organized as either “College-Teaching and Research Sector” or “College-Department” educational bodies. Excellent candidates may apply for transfer to Ph.D. study in the third year.
